Autonomous vehicles promise great benefits to society; reduced accidents, increased mobility for the disabled and those unable to drive for any reason, and others. There are of course a host of problems – developing the technology to the point that vehicles are fully autonomous with no need for driver oversight is farther off than first predicted.
Various states are allowing testing of autonomous vehicles in various stages, and some are allowing limited autonomous vehicles on the roads as taxis in certain areas. As always, states vary in what they will allow and how they even define autonomous vehicle. This chart presents current regulations and statues including definitions of autonomous vehicles, testing requirements, statutes, requirements for a vehicle operating without a human driver and other parameters.
